So I'm gloating to my wife that i wiggled 159 minute show onto 2 cds (thus saving me what 30 cents)and that the song break was still about 2 minutes over the alloted 80 on the disc. I tell her after its done burning (about 4 1/2 minutes worth no less) I get a burn process failed. I stick it in the player anyhow and all is well! She asks "aren't they all the same songs just played in different places?" I said, yeah, but..."I just don't get it" she murmurs before I can try to explain. Sometimes, i guess theres jus no splaining Lucy.

I didn't get it when I first heard the Dead when in high school in the early eighties. It sounded like lame country music to me. Of course, I was into Motorhead, Sabbath and Thin Lizzy. I had to go through a few changes before the Dead not only made sense to me, but I couldn't understand where everyone elses enthusiasm was...

A conversation with my, then 4-year old, son last year.

My Son: "Dad... what music is this?" (Playing on the car stereo).

Me: "This is Grateful Dead... Well, actually it's called Ratdog. The person you hear... Sings for the Grateful Dead."

My Son: "Dad... (3-second pause)... I wanna listen to Grateful Dead."

Priceless... Teach 'em young...

Ha...suppose the question is, though, did he say it with a look of "this band sucks, the Dead must be better!"

Zoey (4 in March) is glad Shunka (dog died last week)is in heaven, "because Jerry is there"
I guess I'm one of the luck ones, girlfriend is a deadhead, she went to more shows than me. Never a complaint about the Dead. Ever.

I get the "Why do you keep torturing me with this music" from my wife. One of her lines is "It all sounds the same just worse in some places". However, I have caught her singing along at times, and she does not seem to have any issues with most of the studio stuff. She reacts to Donna like most people react to fingernails on a blackboard, which I suppose in some cases is warranted. At least my kids like it.

I usually only play it on the computer in the basement (grok) or in the car. I get my fill there so I can torture myself with her music while we're together. Actually I have little problem with what she listens to, maybe because I buy it for her. She is more studio, less live so all the great stuff here and on dime doesn't usually do much for her. I can live with it!

I get to crank it up a little in the kitchen if I'm cooking or cleaning. One night the wife went out and me and the kids listened to the whole 11-11-73 show while playing Oceanopoly (an excellent variation of Monopoly). My eight year old who is taking piano lessons keeps asking me to get her some Grateful Dead piano sheet music, so if any of you know of some good GD piano for beginners I'd be grateful.

While playing a f**king long game of Risk, I got one of my roommates to say that the 10-26-89 Dark Star was "kinda cool".

"Why do you keep torturing me with this music?"

Great.

This one is even better:

"It all sounds the same just worse in some places"

Gotta love it.

That's how I've won the "battle" - my 6 year old asks for "Jerry music".

My wife to me....."How could you fill up an ipod with dead music? Normal people can't fill one up with all of their favorite songs combined!"

Right on--filled mine in a few minutes with lossless shows, and the wife's has never been close to full.

Thats just one of the perks of being a head...when we want we can fill up an ipod with 100 different versions of our favorite song : ) No other music fan can do this.
